Chapter 15

FLASHBACK

Western Burma Jungle

21 October, 1985, 1205 hours

Eagle One followed Vulture Two as they wove their way through thick jungle undergrowth. The pair moved laterally down the mountain towards the place that Vulture Two had referred to as Charlie Roost on the radio. Charlie Roost, as it turned out, was a perfect look-out spot on the side of the mountain that provided a panoramic view of a long section of Charlie Trail. The prominent point jutted from the side of the mountain above a relatively clear area devoid of tall trees for at least two square acres. Heavy vegetation sprouted in every direction from the sides and bottom of the outcrop. The spot on which they lay was shadowed by a cluster of creeping branches that stretched out horizontally across the upper surface about two feet off the ground, providing good top cover.

The visible section of the trail below was quite wide. It crossed the open field about one hundred meters ahead of their position. The exposed area was flanked on the far western side by a wide space of low grass and shrubs that ended parallel to the trail in a very thick, hedge-like wall of jungle growth. The thickness of the jungle walls could easily prohibit rapid movement into decent cover during an ambush. The clearing itself was flat with only low vegetation that would provide almost no cover for the traveling band of Islamic Jihad guerrillas once Vulture and Team Cobra opened fire.

The cleared land looked as if it had at one time been a field for growing crops for a family or two. It may even have been the site of a small village in the past, the remnants of which were long ago reclaimed by the rainforest. Whatever this place may have been in the past, it was clearly the best place to be for this morning’s work. It seemed to him like a textbook example of a perfect sniper hide.

A click sounded in the radio earpiece.

“Vulture, this is Cobra Prime. Target is twenty meters from clearing, strength of six. Package is with the fourth man. The leader is in the third position. I am under the mango tree in the corner to your left, two meters east of the trail. Four is on the other side of the trail just in the tree line directly across from me. Watch for the Russians, they are here somewhere.”

“Copy that Cobra, I see you and I see Four. Eagle is with me on the roost. Cobra Prime, you take target four and six, Four gets two and five, I take one and three.”

“Four copies.”

“Prime copies that, Vulture. Package is now moving into the target area. We are waiting for your shot, Vulture. Throat mikes locked on.”

Karl stared down through his red dot sight towards the southwestern end of the trail. A man in dirty brown and green camouflage emerged from the jungle. He carried an AK-74 rifle slung across his chest. His hand gripped the handle, finger on the trigger guard.
